The Importance of COSHH Risk Assessments

If your business uses or creates substances or carries out processes that might
cause harm to health, the law requires you to control the risks to workers. This legal
duty is set out under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations
2002 (COSHH), which apply to most harmful substances. It’s important to note that
lead and asbestos are covered by separate regulations. You can read the COSHH
regulations on legislation.gov.uk.

Remember that health hazards are not limited to substances labelled as
“hazardous". Some harmful substances can be created by the processes you use,
for example:
Wood dust from sanding
Silica dust from tile cutting
Fumes from welding
A COSHH risk assessment identifies where exposure to hazardous substances may
occur, evaluates the level of risk and outlines the control measures required to
prevent or reduce that exposure. This might include safe handling procedures,
ventilation requirements, or the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
At BHP we support businesses in meeting their COSHH obligations by producing
